General Counselling.

What I Mean By General Counselling.

Picture
General counselling is the umbrella term under which we can park all those life-things we know are there, but which we are not sure how to approach.

That does not mean they are not important issues. In fact, we often try to bury important stuff, and that strategy can be "successfully" for years ...until it's not.
The problem with burying things is we can forget what they really meant to us; did it threaten and make you feel unsafe, was it abusive, did it make you feel unloved or rejected, and do they signify a really good or bad experience? The effects of grief, harm and trauma can stack-up, however they will inevitably emerge again if they are not addressed. This is where some of the difficult feelings can come from.

Whether we like it or not, every feeling is there for a reason.  Some of them may be really unpleasant to face. Yet if you know ‘how’ they are giving you free information, then you can discover the ‘why’ of them being there. Freedom is found when we master those feelings, rather than hiding from them.
General counselling is the kind of a conversation that helps uncover the 'how' and 'why' questions in a gentle and safe way. This does not make it politically correct, or touchy-feely, or tolerant of bad behaviour.

And, just so you know, I have little time for the virtue-signalling nonsense where we are all equal.

The truth is we are all different, which also means we need to stop pretending we all have the same needs; we don’t. You and I are individuals with different life experiences that happened in a unique contexts, that no-one else has had. Your story is unique, and deserves unique consideration.

General counselling will help you discover which concerns and issues are truly significant and valuable. Or are they old stuff re-surfacing and causing you to react in ways you don’t like?

A lot of questions may be asked for just one reason: so that you can find out why you do what you do. And if you want change I will probably also give you some practical ‘homework’ activities to practice to help you grow on your journey.

Consider This.

Come and see me at Resolve Counselling:
  • If you have a general sense of unease that follows you for more than a few weeks
  • if you experience frustrations and blow-ups where you “just lose it!”
  • If you are struggling with grief; this can happen with anything/anyone that has been lost, or are about to be lost
  • If you have questions about spirituality. What is it and how can I be safe with it?
  • If you have issues with addiction - and are tired of battling it alone
  • If anger is an issue for you: where you feel too much of it or not enough. Both of which can be dangerous or can be healthy.
  • If you have any feeling or sense of being ‘stuck’ that has lasted more than a few weeks
  • If you're experiencing sadness or being in a dark place.

We can choose to master the fire of difficulty and stop being its victim. To be constantly thinking about the past means the soul or wairua has become stuck in it.

To be constantly angry means we have not moved on from an event that offended. If we fail to deal with it, depression will probably become a regular part of our life.
